319: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People 30th Anniversary Edition

With author Stephen M. R. Covey

What an honor it is to be asked to participate in the launch of the 30th Anniversary Edition of the #1 business book of the 20th century!

And what a treat it is to talk to the son and namesake of the author himself, Mr. Stephen M. R. Covey.

stephen m r covey

I can honestly say, if the Read to Lead Podcast were to come to an end after today, I would be at complete peace with that.

Why? Because today I am privileged to conduct what is arguably the single most important interview of my 30+ year career.

Not only is Stephen M. R. Covey an accomplished author in his own right (with a New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling book under his belt), but he’s agreed to field a handful of questions from a handful of those impacted by his father’s book over the years.

By “those impacted” I’m talking about you! That’s right. Every question I’m posing to Stephen was submitted by a listener to the podcast.

Of course, the book I’m referring to is called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: 30th Anniversary Edition.

This is a ‘can’t miss’ conversation!

305: Ditch the Me Mindset and Change the World

With 'We' author Dr. Eric George

At first, I wasn’t convinced I could learn a lot about business from a book written by a physician.

Well, let’s just say that fortunately – without yet realizing it at the time – I followed one of the key tenets of this doctor’s new book. I opened my mind to the possibility he may have something valuable to say.

Dr Eric George

His name is Dr. Eric R. George, and his debut book is called We: Ditch the Me Mindset and Change the World.

Does he have something valuable to say? Does he ever!

In We, Eric presents the value of embracing a mindset of connectedness, where the people we encounter represent the source of a fulfilling life.

He takes us on a journey that reveals the six key outcomes of his timeless philosophy.

It’s an easy, and at the same time, transformational read. I encourage you to pick it up.

285: The 10 Laws of Trust with JetBlue Chairman Joel Peterson

Every so often I get to have a conversation with someone I never dreamed I’d be talking to. Today is one of those days.

Several years ago he released a book with a publisher that has since been acquired.

joel peterson

This new publisher decided today’s guest’s book needed a rerelease and we are the beneficiaries of it.

His name is Joel Peterson and his book is called The 10 Laws of Trust: Building the Bonds That Make a Business Great.

Joel says trust is the glue that holds an organization together. It turns deflection into transparency, suspicion into empowerment, and conflict into creativity.

10 Laws of Trust is the playbook for breaking through the operational silos and CYA mentality that plague so many organizations today.

Episode #199: Hiring, Firing, and Creating an Amazing Team Culture

With Chris Mefford

Today marks a first in at least two ways. My guest appears on the show for the first time. And it is – to my knowledge – the first time a guest has appeared whose book came about, in part, by my personal encouragement and prodding.

Chris Mefford has been a long time friend, and I am as excited as anyone to see his hard work come to the masses.

chris mefford

That book is called Hiring, Firing, and Creating an Amazing Team Culture: A Practical Guide for Leaders in a Hurry.

Chris is the former Senior Vice President at Henry Cloud Productions, and former Vice President of Dave Ramsey Event Productions.

If you need help with understanding how to hire, even fire, hold your team accountable, and build a winning culture in your company, no matter the size, then Chris is here to help.

Episode #170: The Science of Succeeding with People

Feat. Vanessa Van Edwards, author of Captivate

I just learned that, earlier this month, this week’s guest became a bestselling author. We sure know how to pick ’em.

I’m talking of course about Vanessa Van Edwards who finds herself at #4 on the WSJ list, ahead of folks like Sheryl Sandberg and Tony Robbins.

vanessa van edwards

Like I said. We know how to pick ’em.

Seriously though, one of the best things about Vanessa’s book is how she manages to take what might otherwise come across as dull research, and explain it in such a way that is truly, um, captivating.

The book is in fact, Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People. From bosses, to first dates, networking partners, and colleagues, we all need to know how people work.

Dive into the book – and today’s episode – and you’ll learn how a self-proclaimed awkward person managed to become an expert in human behavior.

You don’t have to be born with charisma or be naturally outgoing, Vanessa says, to be memorable to the people around you.
