324: The Future of Behavior Design with Dr. BJ Fogg

While technically today’s featured book was released in 2019 (December 31 to be exact), I’ve dubbed it my favorite book so far this year!

Upon reading it, I immediately wanted to share it and attempt to teach its concepts to others. That, to me, is the mark of a great book.

What is this amazing book?

Well, it’s the New York Times bestseller Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything by Dr. BJ Fogg. Or, as BJ would now call it if he could rename it, Tiny Habits: The Future of Behavior Design.

The book sleeve on the front cover says confidently, “This book will change your life.” Just yesterday, my wife saw the book on my desk and asked if the claim was true. I answered with a resounding “YES!”

With breakthrough discoveries in every chapter, you’ll learn the simplest proven ways to transform your life. Whether you want to lose weight, de-stress, sleep better, or be more productive each day, Tiny Habits makes it easy to achieve.

323: Using Authority, Warmth, and Energy to Get Exceptional Results

If you’re not a big fan of the sound of your own voice, you’re certainly not alone

In fact, that opinion puts you squarely in the majority. Most people can’t stand the way they sound.

steve herz

Remember hearing your recorded voice played back for the first time? Yeah. Probably not fun.

Most of us are not even using our natural dynamic voice when we speak, and that’s what today’s guest Steve Herz is here to help with.

The overwhelming majority of the speaking we do is what he calls “private speaking.” We’re not on a stage presenting, in other words. We’re in conversations with one or a few other people.

Yet, there is very little about these speaking moments and a TON written about presenting to crowds from a stage.

Enter Steve Herz. Steve’s book is called Don’t Take Yes for an Answer: Using Authority, Warmth, and Energy to Get Exceptional Results.

It explains why positive feedback limits personal and professional growth and then teaches you how to embrace hard truths and critical feedback to escape mediocrity and break away from the pack.

321: Habits of a Champion with Dana Cavalea

Award-winning, New York Yankees strength coach

One of the greatest things about creating something like a podcast is the doors it opens, allowing you to meet people you wouldn’t have otherwise met.

For me, one of those people is Sherri Griffin.

dana cavalea

In her words, she is Read to Lead’s biggest fan. Who am I to argue?

It’s because of Sherri that I am able to bring to you my guest on today’s episode.

His name is Dana Cavalea, and he is the former Director of Performance for an organization you’ve probably heard of called the New York Yankees. He helped lead the team to a World Series Championship in 2009 and that same year was voted by his peers as the top Strength Coach in Major League Baseball, receiving the Nolan Ryan Award.

Dana’s book is called Habits of a Champion: Nobody Becomes a Champion by Accident.

319: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People 30th Anniversary Edition

With author Stephen M. R. Covey

What an honor it is to be asked to participate in the launch of the 30th Anniversary Edition of the #1 business book of the 20th century!

And what a treat it is to talk to the son and namesake of the author himself, Mr. Stephen M. R. Covey.

stephen m r covey

I can honestly say, if the Read to Lead Podcast were to come to an end after today, I would be at complete peace with that.

Why? Because today I am privileged to conduct what is arguably the single most important interview of my 30+ year career.

Not only is Stephen M. R. Covey an accomplished author in his own right (with a New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling book under his belt), but he’s agreed to field a handful of questions from a handful of those impacted by his father’s book over the years.

By “those impacted” I’m talking about you! That’s right. Every question I’m posing to Stephen was submitted by a listener to the podcast.

Of course, the book I’m referring to is called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: 30th Anniversary Edition.

This is a ‘can’t miss’ conversation!

317: No One’s Listening and It’s Your Fault with Pam Marmon

When I first chatted with today’s guest for this week’s episode, a very specific phrase kept coming to my mind. She is a ‘breath of fresh air.’

Hopefully, it won’t be the last time she and I talk.

Pam Marmon

Her name is Pam Marmon, and if there’s anyone who should know what it takes to successfully navigate change and transform an organization in the process, it’s her.

After all, at age 12, she and her family moved to the U.S. from Bulgaria.

Can you imagine moving to a new country where you know no one, don’t know the language, you’ve left behind all your friends…and you’re 12?!

Resilient doesn’t even begin to describe her.

Her new book, by the way, is called No One’s Listening and It’s Your Fault: Get Your Message Heard During Organization Transformations.

To put it simply, Pam’s book is about one thing: with the proper process, change is not hard.
