361: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets from the Hype Handbook with Michael F. Schein

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of participating in a lively discussion at the New York Public Library on the topic of podcasting.

michael schein

On the panel with me were two other podcasters, one of whom has since written a book, and an incredibly stimulating book it turned out to be.

When the organizer of that event recently reintroduced us, I knew I had to have him on the show.

His name is Michael F. Schein and his new book, released in January, is called The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World’s Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundry Breakers.

In short, Michael’s book suggests that if you’re a business owner, entrepreneur, executive, artist, activist, or thinker who can honestly say that you are truly trying to make the world a better place, it is your moral imperative to learn how to harness raw emotion and irrational thinking to your benefit.

If you’re uncomfortable promoting you and your own work but, deep down, know you need to, get this book now!

336: Building an Unbeatable Business with Square Co-Founder Jim McKelvey

When my wife Annie first launched her side business, one of the most difficult parts of the process was making her business credit card ready.

If you’ve ever gone through this process for your own business, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

jim mckelvey

The paperwork, the contracts, the fees, who could make sense of it all? You might say it was a business model ripe for disruption.

Enter Jim McKelvey and Jack Dorsey, co-founders of Square.

For my wife, her business launch overlapped with the existence of Square, and it wasn’t long before we were canceling contracts and paying the accompanying penalties so that she could say “hello” to the gift-from-heaven that was Square.

Jim McKelvey has a new book out, released earlier this year, called The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time.

My biggest take-away from our conversation is not to count yourself out thinking you can’t do something just because no one else has yet. The world may in fact be waiting for you to make it happen.

I read it from cover to cover and enjoyed Micah’s refreshing and, at times, humorous writing style.
