477: Why Work is No Longer Working and What Do To About It with Seth Godin

Today is a real treat for me (and for you), as I get to welcome—for the third time—the person I consider to be one of the world’s greatest thinkers and authors. He’s certainly had a huge impact on me and my life.

seth godin

That thinker and author is the one and only Seth Godin. He’s written his twenty-first book, and today is the day we get to welcome it to the world.

It’s called The Song Of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams.

Seth argues that real value at work is no longer measured by easy indicators of industrial productivity, but by effective personal interactions, innovation, creative solutions, and resilience. In a world ruled by remote work and artificial intelligence, leaders must disentangle themselves from the pervasive industrialized management system created in the early twentieth century and adopt a new leadership style that places humans at the forefront.

The futility of commanding people to care and managing for short-term results has become clear to
everyone. Instead, leaders must aspire to create the best jobs their employees have ever had while
creating conditions for systemic change. The emotional labor of employees who truly participate in an organization’s mission is the competitive advantage that all businesses need and what the exceptional ones produce.

In The Song of Significance, Seth provides a roadmap for the business leaders who are willing to
create a meaningful future while bravely rejecting the outmoded management models that are no longer serving us. As he writes, “Choosing significance is to dance with fear, and choosing fear
requires belief that what we’re doing matters.”

444: How the Future Works with Helen Kupp

Slack is a tool I use virtually every day. And it’s a tool I’ve been using for more years than I can remember. I never thought I’d one day be interviewing a member of their excellent team but, then again, I’m drawn to smart people who write smart books.

helen kupp

My guest today, Helen Kupp, is one of three writers who helped bring together today’s featured book.

She has co-authored, along with Brian Elliott and Sheela Subramanian, a new book called How the Future Works: Leading Flexible Teams to Do The Best Work of Their Lives.

They argues that the way we work has changed. The era of toiling from nine-to-five, five-days-a-week in the office is now a relic of the past, and is being replaced by a better way—flexible work.

But flexibility means a lot more than a day or two a week to “work from home”: 93% of your employees want more flexibility in when, not just where, they work. They want choice and they are leaving their roles to find it.

The most successful leaders will go much further than offering occasional remote workdays—they will redesign every aspect of how work gets done, from defining how they measure organizational success to training their managers to make it happen.

442: Your Most Important Work is Always Ahead of You with Cynthia Covey Haller

Stephen M. R. Covey has been one of my most favorite authors to interview. I’ve had that opportunity now three times! So when he suggested I talk to his sister about the book she was finishing up, a book co-written with their late father, I didn’t hesitate to say “yes.”

cynthia covey haller

That new book, out today, is called Live Life in Crescendo: Your Most Important Work is Always Ahead of You.

This is the final book from the late, legendary leadership expert Stephen R. Covey of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People fame, offering inspiration and optimism about living your best life.

He and Cynthia began working on it over ten years ago and it’s finally here!

Near the end of his life, Stephen felt there was a final component to his work:

  • How to live your best life no matter your age?
  • How to best respond to life-challenging experiences and setbacks?
  • How do you approach the challenges and opportunities of middle to later life, like staying on top of your career, leading and inspiring others, expanding your role in your community , and what follows next?

Live Life in Crescendo is his and Cynthia’s answer to these questions, outlining his vision for every age and stage of life.

418: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness in Others with Stephen M. R. Covey

Today I welcome back for the third time – and the second time in less than a year – one of my favorite authors. He’s got a brand new book out (released last week) and I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

stephen m. r. covey

My guest is none other than Stephen M. R. Covey, whose previous books include The Speed of Trust and Smart Trust, both #1 Wall Street Journal bestsellers.

His brand new book is called Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness on Others.

Stephen M. R. Covey has made it his life’s work to understand trust in leadership and organizations. In this new book, he makes the compelling argument that even though our world has changed drastically, our style of leadership has not.

Most organizations, teams, schools, and families today still operate from a model rooted in “Command & Control,” focusing on positional power, hierarchies, and rigid compliance. But because of the shifting demographics of the workforce, the changing nature of work itself, and the choices we now have for where and how to work, this old approach to leadership is both outdated, and irrelevant.

417: How to Find What You Love, Love What You Do, and Do It for the Rest of Your Life with Marcus Buckingham

What an awesome and incredibly important discussion I have for you today! It’s my long-awaited sit-down with none other than Marcus Buckingham.

marcus buckingham

I first got the chance to hear Marcus speak fifteen, or maybe, twenty years ago at the annual Global Leadership Summit in Chicago. Marcus was captivating AND inspiring that day.

His new book is fantastic! And, the good news for you is, it officially releases TODAY! It’s called Love + Work: How to Find What You Love, Love What You Do, and Do It for the Rest of Your Life.

So, say you’ve long been told to “Do what you love.” Sounds simple, but the real challenge is how to do this in a world not set up to help you.

Most of us actually don’t know the real truth of what we love—what engages us and makes us thrive—and our workplaces, jobs, schools, even our parents, are focused instead on making us conform.

Sadly, no person or system is dedicated to discovering the crucial intersection between what you love to do and how you contribute it to others.

But Marcus shows you how to break free from this conformity—how to decode your own loves, turn them into their most powerful expression, and do the same for those you lead and those you love.

I hope you’ll click the play button below to learn more about Marcus and his work. For a summary, just keep scrolling.
