356: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking with Michael J. Gelb

If there’s one skill I enjoy learning more about, it’s the skill to communicate effectively, whether written or verbal communication.

So much so that when a new book comes along on the topic of public speaking, I’m almost certain to dive into it. The ability to deliver your messages in an understandable and memorable way is a skill I believe every leader should study and master.

A great place to start is with Michael J. Gelb’s new book called Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: 8 Secrets to Transform Fear and Supercharge Your Career.

Seventy-four percent of Americans, according to Michael, suffer from glossophobia, the fear of public speaking. In fact, even top professional speakers and accomplished actors experience butterflies before presenting. They never eliminate the butterflies; they just teach them how to fly in formation.

306: The Successful Speaker with Grant Baldwin

My guest today has been a friend of mine for a few years now.

I’ve learned a ton from him just watching him and picking up on how he does what he does.

What makes him special? In my opinion, he’s one of the best there is at his craft: the fine art of public speaking.

His name is Grant Baldwin and he’s written a brand new book, out today, along with four-time Read to Lead guest Jeff Goins.

It’s called The Successful Speaker: Five Steps for Booking Gigs, Getting Paid, and Building Your Platform.

Within a week of reading Grant’s book, I secured my own speaking gig worth thousands of dollars using the techniques I learned. It’s that good!

294: Exceptional Presentation Delivery with Tim Pollard

Author of Mastering the Moment

Today’s guest, you might say, takes what he does very seriously.

Another way to say it might be that he’s a little extreme.

tim pollard

However, no one can deny that he is very good at what he does. That’s why I love talking to him so much.

His name is Tim Pollard and his new book is called Mastering the Moment: Perfecting the Skills and Processes of Exceptional Presentation Delivery.

Tim first appeared on Read to Lead to talk about The Compelling Communicator: Mastering the Art and Science of Exceptional Presentation Design.

I love his approach to delivering presentations (a topic about which I am very passionate). I ask a question about this topic of nearly every guest I interview. Today, it receives our focus.

200: A Look Back at 5 Killer Books on Public Speaking and Effective Communication

Wow, what a road this has been. Over 4 1/2 years after the podcast began, episode 200 is here. It has been an incredibly rewarding journey.

I’ve decided to take a look back over the last 100 episodes and feature 5 episodes that centered around one of my favorite topics.

episode 200

These episodes each touch on a topic I think is so important, I ask a question related to it of nearly every guest that comes on the show.

I’m talking about communicating, relating, and, more specifically, public speaking. The art of public speaking and the ability to relate effectively to other people is as important, in my view, as any skill you can hone. In fact, if I weren’t doing the Read to Lead podcast, I’d likely be doing a public speaking-related show. Maybe someday.
