My guest today is someone I’ve learned a ton from when it comes to creating and delivering better presentations.

His name is Dan Roam. I was first impacted by his first book called The Back of the Napkin (links to his books below). Then, it was Show and Tell and Draw to Win. Later, I had the chance to see him present in person and even got to meet him afterward. He is incredibly gifted at what he does.

His new book, which was released in October of last year, is called The Pop-Up Pitch: The Two-Hour Creative Sprint to the Most Persuasive Presentation of Your Life.

404: A Proven Plan for Leading Successful Meetings, Dynamic Workshops, and Effective Training Events with Paul Maltby

Over the years, I’ve definitely read my share of books on the topic of public speaking. It’s a skill I believe I will never stop improving upon. As leaders, I think that goes for all of us.

Being able to effectively communicate one’s ideas – one-on-one or to a group – is critical to our success as leaders.

However, in my 20-plus years as an avid reader, I don’t remember ever coming across a book that delves into the topic of public speaking from the point of view of a trainer or meeting or workshop facilitator.

If there’s one skill I enjoy learning more about, it’s the skill to communicate effectively, whether written or verbal communication.

So much so that when a new book comes along on the topic of public speaking, I’m almost certain to dive into it. The ability to deliver your messages in an understandable and memorable way is a skill I believe every leader should study and master.

A great place to start is with Michael J. Gelb’s new book called Mastering the Art of Public Speaking: 8 Secrets to Transform Fear and Supercharge Your Career.

Seventy-four percent of Americans, according to Michael, suffer from glossophobia, the fear of public speaking. In fact, even top professional speakers and accomplished actors experience butterflies before presenting. They never eliminate the butterflies; they just teach them how to fly in formation.

His name is Michael Hudson. I’ve never met him face-to-face, however, because of a number of mutual connections, we’re “friends” on Facebook. 

Michael stood out to me in part because I saw him as someone who consistently contributed within my community. He’s was quick with a kind word or a helpful tip. He seemed to “spread good cheer” wherever he went.

So, when he sent me a short note mentioning he had a new book out (I believe it was on LinkedIn), I paid attention. The fact the book has the words Public Speaker Secrets in the title didn’t hurt either.
