517: The Vision-Driven Leader with Michael Hyatt (an Encore Presentation of Episode 312)

As I say in today’s podcast, I buy this author’s books before I even know what they’re about.

There are only a few of these kinds of authors on my list, but Michael Hyatt is one of them.

michael hyatt

His latest effort is a book called The Vision Driven Leader: 10 Question to Focus Your Efforts, Energize Your Team, and Scale Your Business.

It is, in my estimation, a book that EVERY leader needs to read, especially now, what with all that is going on in our world today (I’m looking at you COVID-19).

As Michael writes in the book, “…a mission defines what a business is, a vision describes where it’s going. Mission is here; vision is still out there. Mission is now; vision is next.”

The Vision Driven Leader takes you step-by-step from why to what and then how.

Your business will never be the same.

484: The Surprising Science of High-Performing Teams with David Burkus

This week’s guest is making a repeat appearance (or should I say, “three-peat” appearance?). It’s been a while since his last visit, but I can say it is definitely worth the wait.

david burkus

His name is David Burkus. We previously chatted with David about his books Friend of a Friend and Under New Management.

His new book is called Best Team Ever! The Surprising Science of High-Performing Teams.

Talent, David says, doesn’t make the team—the team makes the talent. But why are some teams more motivated, innovative, and successful than others? Why do some groups of talented people fall short against lesser teams? And how do you go about building a high-performing team?

David understands that to build the best team, you must first shape the habits and practices that bring out the best in each member. Best Team Ever reveals what some of the world’s most effective teams do, and shows you how you can do the same.

Banish the frustration of having a team of talented people who can’t perform optimally. Discover how to develop a clear, concise understanding of how your team’s culture affects its performance. Follow this simple, practical blueprint to cultivate a Best Team Ever environment and set your team on a path to success.

458: Over 10MM Copies Sold: My Summary of Atomic Habits by James Clear

Just over four years ago, I interviewed my friend James Clear about his, then, new book Atomic Habits. Little did I know then that this book would rock the publishing world and become a worldwide bestseller.

Jeff Brown

I call it a modern-day 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, or How to Win Friends and Influence People, or Think and Grow Rich.

I had the chance to exchange messages with James over the weekend, and took the opportunity to congratulate him on his incredible milestone (I’d seen a recent post of his on Facebook about it). That milestone is 10MM+ copies sold.

In his post, James was quick to credit everyone else. More than anything he did, James said, it was simple, consistent, and passionate word-of-mouth by us, his readers, that was responsible for his book’s success.

Our exchange inspired me to honor this incredible milestone by revisiting the book in this episode.

This go ’round, I’m sharing an audio summary of Atomic Habits, the audio version of the same written summary I share with my members inside the Read to Lead Community.

By the way, if you’d like to receive a new written book summary every week, jump on over to my Community page and sign up for free. You get access to the Read to Lead Community, the chance to interact with other readers, and a new book summary each and every week.

389: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short Term World with Dorie Clark

My guest today is making her third appearance on the podcast. That’s, in part, because I think she’s one of the best writers around. As I say in today’s episode: when I first hear she’s got something new coming out, I always look forward to it (and I’ve never been disappointed).

dorie clark

I’m talking, of course, about Dorie Clark. She’s a consultant and keynote speaker who teaches executive education at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.

In her new book titled The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short Term World, Dorie says much of the pressure in our culture pushes us toward doing what is easy, what’s guaranteed, or what looks glamorous in the moment.

Dorie argues for doing small things over time to achieve our goals – and being willing to keep at them, even when they seem pointless, boring, or hard.

I’ve loved every one of her books, including this one, and I think you will too.

I hope you’ll click the play button below to learn more about Dorie and her work. For a summary, just keep scrolling.
