Episode #157: Mastering the Art and Science of Exceptional Presentation Design

With The Compelling Communicator Author Tim Pollard

I’ll be the first to admit I have a soft spot for books on messaging. For me, it’s just a subject area where I feel as if there’s always something more or new to learn.

And if my writing in the margins, and all the highlighting and underlining I’ve done inside my copy of today’s featured book is any indication of the amount of insights I’ve gained, then look out because I’m about to be awesome!

My guest today is a chap named Tim Pollard. I call him chap because he’s originally from the UK and, last time I checked, that’s what they call each other over there. Now, however, Tim lives in Billings, MT of all places, so I’ll just call him friend.

His new book, as the image above might have clued you in on, is called The Compelling Communicator: Mastering the Art and Science of Exceptional Presentation Design.

Tim and his company, Oratium, have worked with LinkedIn, Salesforce, Disney, Rockwell, Ericsson, and Graybar, to name a few, and they specialize in training TEDx speakers.

Devouring this book with help you to “powerfully land a small number of big ideas.” Mastering that is the key to any memorable and actionable presentation.

Episode #156: How to Consistently Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

With Andy Molinsky, Ph.D.

If you’ve ever heard phrases like, “the ‘magic’ is in the comfort zone” and others like it, then you’ve been exposed to some of the myths associated with successfully stepping outside your comfort zone.

In the myth above, the reality is the “magic” can happen both inside and outside your comfort zone. If only there was a guide.

Let me ask you a few questions:

  • Do you feel comfortable delivering bad news?
  • Do you look forward to speaking in public?
  • Do you enjoy networking?
  • Is it easy for you to speak your mind and be assertive with friends and colleagues?

If you answered no to any of these questions, Andy Molinsky’s new book can help.

First, let me thank you for being such a loyal listener and fan of the Read to Lead Podcast. It means more to me than you know. Really!

You may recall that at about this time last year, I was in the midst of planning a spring launch of something called Read to Lead University.

Well, for reasons I won’t detail here, RTLU was indefinitely shelved in 2016. At one point I wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day.

Episode #155: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity

With 100-Year Life Co-Author Lynda Gratton

Today’s guest is a favorite among her students. She’s a Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School where she teaches on the Future of Work and directs an executive program on Human Resource Strategy.

She was also named best teacher at London Business School in 2015. I’m talking about Lynda Gratton, co-author of the book The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity.

Many of us have been raised on the traditional notion of a three-stage approach to our working lives: education, followed by work and then retirement. But this well-established pathway is already  beginning to collapse according to Lynda and co-author Andrew Scott.

Whether you are 18, 45 or 60, you’ll need to do things very differently from previous generations and learn to structure your life in completely new ways.

The good news for you and me is Lynda and The 100-Year Life are here to help.
