At first glance, reading a book titled Promote Yourself might sound a bit narcissistic. After all, social media has allowed many people to get quite good at it. And by good, I mean really, really bad.
What good, then, could come from being an expert self-promoter? Aren’t they the person everyone avoids at parties, shuns online and generally dislikes?

Ah, but I’m talking about promotion of a different kind. The kind I liken to a quote from comedian Steve Martin in his book Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life. In it, he writes, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” Or, as Seth Godin puts it in Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?, “Don’t wait to be picked. Pick yourself.”
It is in this spirit of picking yourself that we delve into into today’s episode. In our conversation with Dan, we’ll learn about:
- Dan’s thoughts on today’s job market and what it means particularly for Millennials.
- Ways in which some of today’s brightest companies are evolving to make their culture more Millennial-friendly
- The importance of being more than just your job description by developing new hard skills
- Tips for walking that fine line between gaining visibility and being seen as a promotional jerk
- The key things managers look for when deciding whom to promote
- The importance of mutually beneficial mentor/mentee relationships
- And a lot more!
