Episode #184: Alan Alda on The Art and Science of Relating and Communicating

From If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?

Over the course of my life, I’ve had the opportunity to interview and meet a lot of interesting and amazing people. It’s one of the many reasons I love it so much.

But if, when I started this project, you’d have told me I would one day interview today’s guest, I wouldn’t have believed it.

alan alda

I’m talking of course about the beloved American actor Alan Alda. Lucky for me (and for you) he’s written a book whose subject matter ties in quite nicely with a podcast like Read to Lead.

It’s a book all about the art and science of relating and communicating, something anyone who hopes to be successful has to do well.

There are plenty of bad examples around us of course. But, if you want to avoid being one of them, then today’s episode is for you.

I encourage to check out his latest book called, If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look On My Face?: My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating.

Episode #183: Get More Done in 12 Weeks Than Others Do in 12 Months

I read, like, a lot. And though many of the books I read (and the authors who write them) wind up being featured on the podcast, there are plenty that don’t (and not because they’re not worthy).

Sometimes it just comes down to scheduling or any other number of issues. Suffice it to say there are plenty of authors I’d love to interview that haven’t yet made it on. But that shouldn’t mean we can’t dive into and discuss their latest book, right?

12 Week Year by Brian Moran

The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington is just such a book. It was released in 2013. Like Deep Work, another book I read earlier this year, it has revolutionized how I work. I think it can do the same for you.

In today’s episode, I share some of the key insights and main ideas from the book, as well as a couple of other episodes that compliment this one quite nicely (see below for links).

Episode #181: How to Achieve the Success You’re Wired For

With author Alissa Daire Nelson

If you’re anything like me, your childhood included hearing about the need to be “well-rounded”, a mantra that often came from a well-meaning parent or teacher.

My guest today, though, says we weren’t wired to be well-rounded. She says that, in order to achieve the success you’re wired for, you need to focus on your strengths. That doesn’t mean we get to ignore our weaknesses, but it does drastically alter how we approach them.

alissa daire nelson

Alissa Daire Nelson is a Strengths Strategy Certified Coach and, today, she’s here to talk about helping you embrace and live out the awesome you have inside you.

Her new book is called From Frustrated to Frickin’ Awesome: 4 Steps to Achieve the Success You’re Wired For. She’s also offering a free PDF copy of the book just for you as a listener to Read to Lead.

During August, Try My Members-Only Book Club for Just $1

Read to Lead University registration is open!

My 16th wedding anniversary was last Friday and, apart from some nasty weather Friday afternoon, Annie and I had a wonderful weekend celebrating.

So much so it’s put me in a generous mood. 🙂

RTLU Trial - August 2017

Yesterday wrapped up month six of Read to Lead University. In that time, members and I have read AND met live to discuss these books:

  • Reach by Andy Molinsky
  • Deep Work by Cal Newport
  • 12 Week Year by Brian Moran
  • Pivot by Jenny Blake
  • The Compelling Communicator by Tim Pollard
  • Start with Why by Simon Sinek

Get this: Two of the above authors fielded questions about their books submitted by members! AND, two more authors actually joined us for our live book chat!

This component has turned out to be one of our members’ favorite aspects of RTLU.

Turns out that, in August, we’ll again be joined during our live book chat by the author herself.

Episode #177: How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness

With Fearvana author Akshay Nanavati

Recently, and out of the blue, I had a friend and former client introduce me via email to today’s guest.

As I studied up on him, I decided to check out his book. The main title was, initially at least, lost on me. But when I read the subtitle, that’s when it all came together. I knew this was an author and book I needed to feature.

Allow me then to introduce you to Akshay Nanavati, author of Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness. For a few weeks, the book is available at that link for free (you just pay shipping). Otherwise, you can grab it on Amazon.

In the book, Akshay essentially asks, “What if you could turn your greatest fears and obstacles into your biggest advantages and opportunities?”

With Akshay’s help, you’ll learn to turn traditionally negative emotions like fear, anxiety and guilt into health, wealth and happiness.
