Episode #187: Live Your Startup Dream Without Leaving Your Day Job

With 10% Entrepreneur author, Patrick McGinnis

I was first introduced to today’s guest well over a year ago by former Read to Lead guest Amy Whitaker.

Amy joined us back in episode #134 and, soon after, made the introductions via email. Unfortunately, it was an intro I completely dropped the ball on. Patrick and I exchanged pleasantries, and that’s as far as it went.

Patrick McGinnis

Turns out Patrick and I are both fairly busy, neither of us remembering this introduction until, that is, I was searching my Gmail inbox for some last-minute info I needed to check on before chatting with him.

The moral? Simple. Better late than never. 🙂

Patrick’s now 18-month-old-and-still-incredibly-relevant book is called The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job.

The key, you see, is diversifying your work portfolio, just as you do your financial one (you do that, right?). In The 10% Entrepreneur, Patrick first makes the case for why you need to think like one (Part I of the book), and follows it up with exactly h0w to go about it (Part II of the book).

Episode #180: How to Start a Business While Working a Full-Time Job

With Sean McCabe

If you’ve ever desired to start your own business, you may have toyed with the idea of saving up some money, quitting your job, and going all in.

My guest today, though, has a better model he calls overlap. It’s just like it sounds. It’s possible to leverage the margins of life outside your job and grow your business on the side, even if there are things like small children in the mix for you.

sean mccabe

His name is Sean McCabe and his new book is called Overlap: Start a Business While Working a Full-Time Job. For a limited time, you can snag a free copy of the audiobook here.

Sean’s book is a practical, how-to guide for finally doing that thing you’ve always wanted to do.

Episode #177: How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness

With Fearvana author Akshay Nanavati

Recently, and out of the blue, I had a friend and former client introduce me via email to today’s guest.

As I studied up on him, I decided to check out his book. The main title was, initially at least, lost on me. But when I read the subtitle, that’s when it all came together. I knew this was an author and book I needed to feature.

Allow me then to introduce you to Akshay Nanavati, author of Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness. For a few weeks, the book is available at that link for free (you just pay shipping). Otherwise, you can grab it on Amazon.

In the book, Akshay essentially asks, “What if you could turn your greatest fears and obstacles into your biggest advantages and opportunities?”

With Akshay’s help, you’ll learn to turn traditionally negative emotions like fear, anxiety and guilt into health, wealth and happiness.

Episode #166: How Companies Like Facebook, VMware and 5-hour Energy Dominate Markets

With Play Bigger co-author Christopher Lochhead

When multiple people in my life, otherwise unrelated to one another, are recommending I read a particular book, I pay attention. I’m pretty smart that way.

So, when I was unable to get away from one recent recommendation, I finally decided to give it a go. And I’m glad I did.

christopher lochhead

The book I’m talking about is called Play Bigger: How Pirates, Dreamers, and Innovators Create and Dominate Markets by my guest Christopher Lochhead, along with Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson and Kevin Maney.

They ask what do Facebook, Google, Salesforce.com, Uber, VMware, Netflix and a few others, have in common? Why do some start-ups last and build value while others flame out?

They key, Christopher and his co-authors argue, has to do with creating, developing, and dominating new categories of products and services.

In today’s episode, Christopher and I talk about how it’s done. Click “play” below for more.

Episode #165: Becoming a Pro at Live Video Streaming

With Live Video Expert Luria Petrucci

I can point to a couple of people who were super influential in my desire to launch this podcast. Today’s guest is one of those people.

Luria Petrucci was making a splash and breaking new ground when she launched her own video podcast called GeekBeat.tv over 11 years ago back in late 2005.

luria petrucci

Not long after that, I would receive, as an anniversary gift, a video iPod from my awesome wife. So, what did I do? I went out and found some awesome podcasts to listen to, and in Luria’s case, watch.

She was immediately engaging, and her episodes were infectious. As a self-professed early adopter, I so looked forward to what she had to say about the latest and greatest tech gadget.

If you had told me back then that one day I would be interviewing her on my very own show, I wouldn’t have believed it. Yet, here we are.

Because of the influence she’s had on me, and the wonderful work she’s doing helping to demystify live streaming video for the Average Joe like you and me, I decided to make, for the first time in the history of Read to Lead, an exception.

Luria hasn’t (yet) written a book. That’s right. She’s not officially an author. However, when it comes to demonstrating out-of-the-box leadership, not to mention overcoming life’s obstacles and living life outside your comfort zone, there are very few better real-life examples I could choose to highlight.

In short, she’s an inspiration. Click the play button below and let Luria inspire you.
