Are you unhappy where you’re at in your career? Did you dread getting up this morning and driving to work? If so, then today’s episode is especially for you.
Recent studies show you’re not alone. An Inc.com article from last year pointed out that over 70 percent of workers say they are dissatisfied in their jobs.
A recent Gallup poll says that “87 percent of workers are emotionally disconnected from their workplaces and less likely to be productive.”
If you’re in that group I feel for you because that was me at one time. And to make matters worse, I had no idea what my next move should be.
What I did know was that if I stayed in the same industry, the opportunities where I lived were limited. And I wasn’t willing to move to another town.
What I really wanted to do was venture out on my own. But, I wasn’t even sure what I’d do for an income. I wanted to be my own boss, but the question was…the boss of what?!

If you’re a regular listener, you may know a bit of the story. Eventually, the decision would be made for me. I was let go. But thankfully, I wasn’t caught completely off guard.
Crucial career decisions I made leading up to my exit proved to be the difference between me thriving in this new phase and standing in the unemployment line.
Today, I want to share with you three reasons you should consider going boss-free. Now, to be clear, this path isn’t for everyone. But, if you’re dissatisfied with your current situation, and the idea of another job just doesn’t light your fire, then consider these advantages.
- You and your family become the sole deciders of how you will spend your time
This is as big an advantage as just about any I can think of. I work when I want and I don’t when I don’t. It’s really that simple. It’s not some pie-in-the-sky notion.
Boss-free means I can take off four hours in the middle of the day EVERY Wednesday and have a “date day” with my wife. I don’t take appointments during that time. You can’t get on my schedule then.
I can say no to the projects that don’t light me up and yes to just the ones that do. There’s no one else deciding projects for me. Now, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns of course.
Are there times when I do things I don’t necessarily enjoy? Sure, that comes with just about anything. But those times are far outweighed by time spent doing things I truly enjoy.
- Income Source diversification
When you invest a portion of your income, you want your portfolio to be diversified right? That’s as simple an investment principle as there is.
But most people don’t recognize the value of diversification in their income SOURCES.
When I was an employee, I had one income source. That’s it! When I started a side hustle, I added a few.
When I launched fully on my own, I gained a dozen or so clients within a few weeks. 12 different income sources. If two of them disappear for unexpected reasons, I’ve still got the other 10 don’t I?
Eventually, I was able to add even more diversification because I had income from multiple streams…meaning coaching clients, course students, book club members, mastermind members, speaking gigs, and several others to boot.
No longer was I vulnerable to the decision of a single individual. We hear about the security in a steady paycheck, benefits, vacations, etc. I’ve been around long enough to have all those things taken away from me multiple times through no fault of my own. There is NOTHING secure about that.
- Get back the personal connection to the impact your work has on other people
If you don’t feel a personal connection to the impact that your work has on other people or in the world, that might be because you know, on some level, that you’re not doing what you’re meant to do.
In that case, it’s worth spending some time to figure out what your purpose is, and whether or not that can be fulfilled working for someone else or whether it necessitates a different path.
Don’t misunderstand. There is nothing wrong with working for someone else. But if your background is anything like mind, society and maybe even your family told you that the ultimate goal was a steady job.
We need employees, make no mistake. I just want to prompt you to consider options you may not have considered before. Options I once thought weren’t possible for me either.
For a NO-RISK of pursuing this possibility for yourself, I want to invite you to my upcoming Boss-Free Virtual Summit. It’s a conference that happens completely online, and can be viewed from anywhere FOR FREE!
